Knowra Imagination Imagination Imagination is the mental capacity to form images, ideas, or possibilities not directly present to the senses. It can recombine remembered experience or construct novel scenarios.
Mental imagery : The experience of perceiving or manipulating sensory-like representations in the absence of corresponding external stimuli. It is imagination’s image-forming mode, spanning visual, auditory, and other senses.
Perception : The processes by which sensory information is organized and interpreted. Unlike perception, imagination can present content without current sensory input.
Creativity : The production of ideas or works that are both novel and valuable within a context. Imagination supplies possibilities that creative thinking selects and develops.
Fantasy : Imaginative thought or fiction centered on events and worlds departing from ordinary reality. Fantasy is a recognizable imaginative mode, not the full range of imagination.
Social imagination : The capacity to envision social arrangements, shared futures, and ways of life beyond existing conditions. It extends individual possibility-making to institutions and collective futures.
Episodic memory : Memory for personally experienced events situated in time and place. Recalled episodes supply details that imagination can recombine into scenes that never occurred.
Memory : The capacity to encode, retain, and retrieve information and experience. Imagination draws on stored information but can transform it beyond faithful recollection.
Design thinking : An approach to solving problems through understanding needs, generating ideas, prototyping, and testing. Designers imagine alternatives before materializing and evaluating them.
Daydreaming : Spontaneous, internally directed thought occurring while a person is awake. It is a common form of imagination that can arise without deliberate control.
Empathy : The capacity to understand or share another person's feelings or perspective. Imagining another person's perspective can support empathy, though the two capacities are not identical.
