Impartiality

Impartiality is the quality of judging or acting without favoring one person, group, or position over another. It requires decisions to rest on relevant reasons rather than personal allegiance or bias.

Procedural fairness: Procedural fairness is the use of fair, consistent processes when making decisions that affect people. Consistent procedures help prevent personal preferences from determining how cases are handled.
Judicial independence: Judicial independence is the ability of courts and judges to decide cases free from improper external influence. Institutional independence helps judges apply law without political pressure or favoritism.
Objectivity: Objectivity is the attempt to describe or judge matters according to facts and standards independent of personal feelings. Objectivity concerns grounding judgment in facts, while impartiality concerns treating competing parties without favoritism.
Legitimacy: Legitimacy is the recognized rightfulness or authority of a person, institution, rule, or decision. Perceived impartiality can make decisions seem rightful even to those who lose.
Conflict of interest: A conflict of interest occurs when personal interests could improperly influence professional judgment or action. Recognizing and managing conflicts protects decisions from competing loyalties.
Natural justice: Natural justice is a set of legal principles requiring fair procedures, including an unbiased decision-maker and a chance to be heard. Its rule against deciding one's own cause makes impartiality a procedural requirement.
Neutrality: Neutrality is the condition of not taking sides in a dispute or conflict. Neutrality often means withholding alignment; impartiality can still require evidence-based criticism of one side.
Procedural justice: Procedural justice is the perceived fairness of the processes through which authorities make decisions. People often judge authorities by whether they listened and applied rules impartially.
Recusal: Recusal is the withdrawal of a person from a decision in which their impartiality may reasonably be questioned. Stepping aside can preserve confidence when neutrality is difficult to maintain.
Ombudsman: An ombudsman is an independent official who investigates complaints about public administration or other institutions. An ombudsman's independent review can address claims that an institution treated someone unfairly.
