Imperial Japanese Navy

The naval branch of Japan’s armed forces from 1869 until its dissolution in 1945. It grew into a major Pacific power before and during the Second World War.

Kantai Kessen: A Japanese naval strategy for winning a decisive battle against an enemy fleet after attrition weakened it. This doctrine guided fleet design and planning against the United States Navy.
Meiji Restoration: The political transformation beginning in 1868 that restored imperial rule and established Japan’s modern state. The new government created a national navy as part of centralizing military power.
Tōgō Heihachirō: A Japanese admiral who commanded the Combined Fleet at the Battle of Tsushima in 1905. His victory became a defining example of Japanese naval command.
Battle of Tsushima: A 1905 naval battle in which Japan destroyed much of Russia’s Baltic Fleet in the Tsushima Strait. The victory established the navy’s reputation as a major world power.
Surrender of Japan: Japan’s acceptance of Allied surrender terms in August 1945, formally signed on September 2. The surrender ended the navy’s wartime operations and preceded its dissolution.
Japanese aircraft carrier: An aircraft carrier built or operated by Japan. Carrier aviation became the navy’s main striking arm in the Pacific War.
Boshin War: The 1868–1869 Japanese civil war that ended the Tokugawa shogunate and secured imperial rule. Its naval clashes exposed the need for a unified national fleet.
Yamamoto Isoroku: A Japanese admiral and commander-in-chief of the Combined Fleet during the early Pacific War. He directed the attack on Pearl Harbor and subsequent major operations.
Attack on Pearl Harbor: A Japanese air and naval strike on the United States Pacific Fleet in Hawaii on December 7, 1941. The attack opened Japan’s war with the United States and showcased carrier-based striking power.
Japanese demobilization: The postwar dismantling of Japan’s armed forces under Allied occupation. Demobilization formally ended the Imperial Japanese Navy as a military institution.
