Inca road system

The Inca road system was a network built and maintained by the Inca Empire across the Andes. It linked imperial territories and supported travel, communication, and administration.

Qhapaq Ñan: The principal Andean road network of the Inca Empire, extending through territories now in six South American countries. This name designates the wider network whose routes formed the empire’s road system.
Inca Empire: A pre-Columbian Andean empire centered at Cusco that expanded across western South America in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Imperial rule created the need to connect distant territories through a maintained road network.
Inca administration: The political and bureaucratic organization through which Inca rulers governed their empire. Roads helped officials communicate with provinces and coordinate imperial authority.

Inca architecture: The building traditions of the Inca, known for stone construction adapted to Andean settings. Road engineering formed part of a broader Inca capacity to build across challenging terrain.
Royal Road: An ancient Persian route that connected major regions of the Achaemenid Empire. It offers another imperial example of long-distance communication supported by state infrastructure.
