Indian Wars

Indian Wars is a historical label for conflicts between Indigenous peoples and colonial or national governments in several regions. The term covers distinct campaigns and resistance movements rather than one continuous war.

Anglo-Powhatan Wars: A series of seventeenth-century conflicts between English colonists in Virginia and the Powhatan Confederacy. These wars began English America’s prolonged pattern of settlement conflict with Indigenous nations.
Indian removal: The coerced relocation of Indigenous peoples from their homelands by colonial and national governments. Removal policies turned territorial expansion into forced migration and armed resistance.
European colonization of the Americas: The establishment of European empires and settlements across the Americas from the late fifteenth century onward. Colonization brought land competition, shifting alliances, and armed encounters with Indigenous nations.
Trail of Tears: The forced removal of several Southeastern Indigenous nations to Indian Territory in the 1830s. It shows how military pressure and removal policy displaced entire nations beyond battlefield campaigns.
Pequot War: A 1636–1638 conflict in New England involving the Pequot, English colonists, and their Indigenous allies. Its destruction of Pequot power became an early model of colonial conquest in New England.
Treaty of Greenville: A 1795 treaty in which Indigenous nations ceded much of present-day Ohio to the United States. Its land cessions followed U.S. military victories and established a recurring treaty-and-expansion pattern.
Manifest Destiny: The nineteenth-century belief that the United States was destined to expand across North America. This expansionist ideology helped justify the seizure of Indigenous homelands in the West.
Dawes Act: An 1887 U.S. law that divided many reservation lands into individual allotments and opened remaining lands to non-Indigenous settlement. Allotment extended dispossession through law after the major U.S. military campaigns ended.
King Philip's War: A 1675–1676 war between New England colonists and a coalition led by Wampanoag sachem Metacom. It was among the deadliest wars, relative to population, in colonial American history.
Indian reservations: Areas of land set aside for Indigenous nations under governments’ legal and administrative systems. Reservation creation often followed military defeat, dispossession, and confinement to reduced territories.
