Indonesian National Revolution

The armed and diplomatic struggle from 1945 to 1949 through which the Republic of Indonesia secured independence from the Netherlands.

Indonesian Declaration of Independence: The 17 August 1945 proclamation by which Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta declared Indonesia independent. It established the republic whose independence the revolution sought to defend.
Battle of Surabaya: A major battle in November 1945 between Indonesian forces and British-led troops in Surabaya. Its scale made armed resistance visible internationally and became a lasting symbol of sacrifice.
Sukarno: An Indonesian nationalist leader who became the republic’s first president after independence was proclaimed in 1945. His presidency anchored the republican government through military crises and negotiations.
Transfer of sovereignty over Indonesia: The formal Dutch transfer of sovereignty to the United States of Indonesia on 27 December 1949. It ended the revolution’s central contest, though the new state initially had a federal structure.

Dutch–Indonesian Operation Kraai: The Dutch offensive of December 1948 that captured Yogyakarta and arrested key republican leaders. Despite capturing the capital, it failed to eliminate republican resistance.
