Inductor

An inductor is a passive electrical component that stores energy in a magnetic field when current flows through it, usually using a coil of wire. Its changing current produces a voltage that opposes the change.

Inductance: Inductance is the property of a circuit or component that links changing current to induced voltage. It quantifies the voltage response to changing current in an inductor.
Electric current: Electric current is the rate at which electric charge flows through a conductor or circuit. Current through the coil creates the magnetic field that stores energy.
LC circuit: An LC circuit combines inductance and capacitance to produce oscillation or resonance. The inductor and capacitor exchange stored magnetic and electric energy.
Ideal inductor: An ideal inductor has inductance but no resistance, capacitance, or energy loss. It isolates the magnetic energy storage and voltage response from practical imperfections.
Faraday's law of induction: Faraday's law states that changing magnetic flux through a circuit induces an electromotive force. It governs the induced voltage associated with an inductor's changing magnetic field.
Voltage: Voltage is the electric potential difference between two points. An inductor develops voltage when its current changes.
Inductive filter: An inductive filter uses an inductor to reduce unwanted changes or frequency components in a signal. Its opposition to rapid current changes helps smooth circuit signals.
Parasitic capacitance: Parasitic capacitance is unintended capacitance between parts of a component or circuit. A coil's winding capacitance limits its ideal inductive behavior at high frequencies.
Magnetic flux: Magnetic flux measures the magnetic field passing through a specified surface. Current changes alter the magnetic flux linked with an inductor's coil.
Direct current: Direct current is electric current that flows in one direction. After transients settle, an ideal inductor passes steady direct current without voltage drop.
