Industrial unionism

Industrial unionism organizes workers across different occupations within an industry into the same union, rather than dividing them by trade or craft.

Craft unionism: Labor organization that groups workers according to their particular trade or craft. It organizes by occupation, the boundary industrial unionism crosses.
Industrial Workers of the World: A radical labor union founded in 1905 that sought to organize workers across industries into one union. The IWW became the best-known American advocate of industrial unionism.
Industrial union: A labor union whose membership includes workers in multiple occupations within a particular industry. It is the organization built around industrial unionism’s defining membership principle.
United Auto Workers: A U.S. labor union representing workers in automobile and related industries. It organized production workers across many jobs within the auto industry.
Labor movement: The organized activity of workers seeking improved rights, conditions, and economic power. Industrial unionism is one organizational strategy within this broader movement.
Business unionism: A pragmatic union approach focused on members’ wages, benefits, and working conditions through collective bargaining. It contrasts with strategies that seek broader social or economic transformation.
American Federation of Labor: A federation of labor unions founded in 1886, historically organized mainly around skilled trades. Its craft-union structure sharpened debates over organizing unskilled and semiskilled workers.
Collective bargaining: Negotiation between employers and workers’ representatives over employment terms and conditions. A shared union can bargain for workers across occupations in an industry.
United Mine Workers of America: A labor union representing coal miners and other workers in the mining industry. Its membership joined workers across mining occupations in a common union.
Labor-management relations: The interactions between employers and workers or their representatives over employment and workplace governance. Industry-wide unions change the scale and structure of employer negotiations.
