Infantry

Infantry are soldiers trained to fight primarily on foot and the military branch composed of those soldiers. They can use vehicles for transport while dismounting to fight.

Fire and movement: A tactical method in which one element provides covering fire while another moves toward a position. Infantry units use this method to advance while limiting exposure to enemy fire.
Rifle: A long-barreled firearm with spiral grooves that impart spin to its projectile. The rifle is a common individual weapon for infantry soldiers.
Ancient Greek warfare: The military practices of ancient Greek communities, including the use of citizen soldiers and hoplite formations. Greek hoplites offer a well-known early example of organized infantry warfare.
Light infantry: Infantry organized for mobility and operations with relatively little heavy equipment or vehicle support. Light infantry emphasizes movement through terrain where heavy forces are less effective.
Cavalry: Military forces organized around mounted troops, historically on horses and later using vehicles. Cavalry’s mobility contrasts with infantry’s reliance on movement and combat on foot.
Small-unit tactics: The methods by which small military groups coordinate movement, fire, and protection in combat. Infantry combat often depends on teams and squads acting under shared plans.
Squad: A small military unit, typically composed of several soldiers and led by a noncommissioned officer. The squad is a basic unit for organizing infantry movement and combat.
Roman legion: The principal military unit of ancient Rome, comprising organized infantry supported by other forces. The legion shows how disciplined infantry formations supported Roman expansion.
Mechanized infantry: Infantry transported and supported by armored fighting vehicles, often capable of fighting alongside them. Mechanized units combine foot combat with protected mobility and vehicle support.
Armored warfare: The use of armored fighting vehicles to maneuver, protect forces, and deliver firepower in combat. Armored forces offer protection and mobility that infantry cannot carry on foot.
