Inference

Inference is the process of deriving conclusions from evidence, premises, or observations. Its conclusions may be certain or uncertain, depending on the reasoning method and available information.

Premise: A statement offered as a reason or basis for a conclusion. Premises supply the starting claims from which deductive inferences derive conclusions.
Deductive reasoning: Reasoning in which a conclusion follows necessarily from its premises if the argument is valid. Deduction produces certainty about the conclusion when valid premises are true.
Scientific method: A systematic approach to developing and testing explanations through observation and experiment. Scientists infer whether evidence supports hypotheses and revise explanations accordingly.
Deduction and induction: Two broad reasoning patterns: deduction guarantees conclusions from valid premises, while induction supports generalizations without guaranteeing them. Their contrasting standards clarify why some inferences are certain and others defeasible.
Evidence: Information that supports or challenges a claim. Evidence grounds inferences about events and claims that are not directly established by premises.
Inductive reasoning: Reasoning that generalizes from observations or cases to conclusions that are probable, not guaranteed. Induction extends observed patterns beyond the evidence already collected.
Machine learning: A field that develops algorithms that learn patterns from data to make predictions or decisions. Many models infer outputs for new cases from patterns learned in training data.
Observation: The act of registering or measuring features of an event or object. Observation supplies information; inference goes beyond it to derive a conclusion.
Conclusion: A proposition reached through reasoning or supported by evidence. Every inference connects its starting information to a conclusion.
Abductive reasoning: Reasoning that proposes the best available explanation for observed evidence. Abduction infers a plausible cause or explanation from its effects.
