Interfaith dialogue

Interfaith dialogue is conversation and cooperation among people or communities from different religions. It can seek mutual understanding, address shared concerns, or support peaceful coexistence without erasing religious differences.

Dialogue: A structured exchange in which participants share perspectives and respond to one another. Interfaith dialogue adapts this broader practice to religious differences.
Parliament of the World's Religions: An international interreligious gathering first held in Chicago in 1893. Its inaugural meeting became a landmark in organized modern interfaith encounter.
Swami Vivekananda: An Indian Hindu monk whose 1893 address at the Parliament of the World's Religions introduced many Western audiences to Hindu thought. His speech became a defining early moment in public interreligious exchange.
Interreligious peacebuilding: Efforts by religious communities to prevent or transform conflict and support peace. Dialogue can create relationships and channels for cooperation across conflict lines.
Proselytism: The active attempt to persuade someone to adopt a particular religion. Dialogue seeks mutual understanding, while proselytism seeks religious change.
Scriptural reasoning: A practice in which Jews, Christians, and Muslims study passages from their scriptures together. It creates dialogue through close reading of texts participants hold sacred.
World Council of Churches: An international fellowship of churches founded in 1948 to pursue Christian unity and cooperation. Its interreligious work helped shape Christian engagement with other faiths.
Hans Küng: A Swiss Catholic theologian known for his work on global ethics and dialogue among religions. He argued that peace among nations depends on peace among religions.
Interfaith marriage: A marriage between people belonging to different religious traditions. Couples and families often negotiate religious differences through ongoing dialogue.
Syncretism: The blending of elements from different religious traditions into a combined system or practice. Dialogue can preserve differences rather than merge traditions.
