International Brigades

Foreign volunteer units that fought for the Spanish Republic in the Spanish Civil War, organized through the Communist International. Their members came from dozens of countries and served alongside Spanish Republican forces.

Communist International: An international organization founded in 1919 to coordinate communist parties and promote world revolution. It organized recruitment and political coordination for the Brigades.
Spanish coup of July 1936: A military uprising against Spain’s elected Second Republic that began on 17 July 1936 and triggered civil war. The failed coup created the war that prompted foreign volunteers to organize.
Merriman Brigade: A unit of American volunteers in the International Brigades, named after commander Robert Hale Merriman. It offers a specific example of how national volunteer groups entered the Spanish war.
League of Nations: An international organization founded after World War I to promote cooperation and prevent conflict. The Brigades’ withdrawal was tied to international efforts to end foreign intervention in Spain.
Albacete: A city in southeastern Spain that served as the International Brigades’ principal training and administrative center. Volunteers assembled and received military training there before deployment.
Non-Intervention Agreement: A 1936 international agreement intended to prevent foreign intervention in the Spanish Civil War. Its restrictions did not stop covert support or the arrival of volunteers for the Republic.
Robert Hale Merriman: An American volunteer who commanded the Abraham Lincoln Battalion and later the XV International Brigade. His career illustrates the leadership responsibilities taken on by foreign volunteers.
Republican exodus from Spain: The mass flight of Spanish Republicans into France as Franco’s forces conquered Catalonia in 1939. Many surviving volunteers left Spain amid the Republic’s collapse and the wider refugee crisis.
Spanish Republican Army: The military forces that defended the Spanish Republic during the Spanish Civil War. Brigade units fought within the Republic’s wider military effort.
Battle of Guadalajara: A March 1937 Republican victory over Italian forces advancing toward Madrid. The Italian defeat gave the Brigades’ international antifascist cause a prominent battlefield example.
