Internet art

Internet art is art created for or through networked digital environments. It uses the internet’s communication systems, interfaces, and social or technical structures as artistic material.

Net.art: An artistic movement of the 1990s that used the internet as both medium and subject. Its early works made browser interfaces, hyperlinks, and network disruptions part of the artwork.
The Thing (computer network): An artist-run bulletin board system founded in New York in 1991 for cultural exchange. It connected artists before the World Wide Web became a dominant public medium.
My Boyfriend Came Back from the War: A 1996 hypertext artwork by Olia Lialina built from frames, links, and fragmented dialogue. Its browser-based form makes clicking and rearranging frames part of its narrative.
Digital art: Art made with digital technologies, including work that does not depend on network access. Internet art is a network-dependent subset of this wider field.
Browser art: Digital art whose form or behavior depends on a web browser. It turns the interface used to access online content into an artistic medium.
Rhizome: A nonprofit arts organization founded in 1996 to support digital art and culture. It helped build a lasting community and archive around internet-based art.
The World’s First Collaborative Sentence: A 1994 online artwork by Douglas Davis inviting participants to append words to a shared sentence. It turns remote audience contributions into the work’s evolving content.
Web design: The practice of planning and creating websites’ visual presentation and user experience. Internet art may use website conventions while resisting their usual goals of clarity and utility.
Hypertext fiction: Literary work in which linked text passages allow readers to choose paths through a narrative. Its branching links show how internet art can make navigation part of a work’s structure.
Ada'web: An online exhibition platform that commissioned and presented web-based art from 1994 to 1998. Its commissions treated the web as a site for producing art, not merely displaying it.
