Internet radio

Internet radio delivers audio programming continuously over the internet, often through scheduled channels. It includes both online simulcasts of terrestrial stations and services created specifically for streaming.

Streaming media: Media delivered over a network for playback while data is still arriving. Internet radio is a continuous audio use of streaming media.
Carl Malamud: An American internet pioneer who founded Internet Multicasting Service and helped create early online audio broadcasts. His 1993 internet radio project demonstrated that scheduled audio could be distributed online.
Online radio station: A service that broadcasts audio programming over the internet, either live or on a schedule. It is the station-based form of internet radio, including web-only broadcasters.
Broadcast radio: Radio programming transmitted over terrestrial airwaves from broadcast stations to receivers. It uses licensed radio spectrum rather than internet connections to reach listeners.
Icecast: Open-source server software for streaming audio and video over the internet. It can distribute live internet-radio streams to many listeners.
Internet Talk Radio: An early online radio program launched by Carl Malamud in 1993. It is a landmark example of internet radio before widespread broadband access.
Radio simulcasting: The simultaneous transmission of a radio program through multiple distribution channels. Terrestrial stations extend their broadcasts online by simulcasting them.
Satellite radio: Subscription radio delivered primarily by satellites to specialized receivers. It offers nationwide coverage without relying on internet access.
SHOUTcast: A streaming-audio system comprising server and client software, widely used for internet radio. It helped establish a common infrastructure for independent online stations.
RealAudio: A media format and software system introduced by RealNetworks for streaming audio over the internet. It made practical near-real-time audio playback possible on early, slow internet connections.
