Intranasal corticosteroid

An anti-inflammatory medicine delivered as a nasal spray or other intranasal formulation. It reduces inflammation in the nasal lining, especially in allergic rhinitis.

Glucocorticoid receptor: A cellular receptor that binds glucocorticoids and regulates gene expression and inflammatory activity. Intranasal corticosteroids bind this receptor to suppress inflammatory signaling in nasal tissue.
Seasonal allergic rhinitis: Allergic rhinitis triggered by pollen or other allergens present during particular seasons. Intranasal corticosteroids can control its congestion, sneezing, itching, and runny nose.
Fluticasone propionate: A synthetic glucocorticoid used in nasal sprays and other formulations to treat inflammatory conditions. It is one widely used active ingredient in intranasal corticosteroid products.
Oral antihistamine: A medicine taken by mouth that blocks histamine receptors to relieve allergic symptoms. Unlike nasal corticosteroids, oral antihistamines often target itching and sneezing more than congestion.
Onset of action: The time between taking a medicine and the beginning of its therapeutic effect. Nasal corticosteroids may begin helping within hours, while full benefit can take several days of regular use.
Allergic rhinitis: Nasal inflammation caused by an immune response to airborne allergens. This is the main condition in which intranasal corticosteroids reduce symptoms and mucosal inflammation.
Perennial allergic rhinitis: Allergic rhinitis caused by exposures that persist throughout the year, such as dust mites or animal allergens. Regular nasal corticosteroid use can reduce persistent allergy symptoms.
Mometasone furoate: A synthetic corticosteroid used in nasal sprays for allergic rhinitis and nasal polyps. It is a common intranasal option with low systemic availability when used as directed.
Leukotriene receptor antagonist: A medicine that blocks leukotriene receptors involved in airway and allergic inflammation. It is an alternative or add-on approach, though it generally differs in effectiveness and risk profile.
Adverse effect: An unintended harmful effect associated with a medicine or other intervention. Their risks include local irritation and, less commonly, effects related to systemic corticosteroid exposure.
