Iranian Intermezzo

A period, roughly from the ninth to eleventh centuries, when Iranian dynasties ruled much of the Islamic world while Abbasid caliphs retained nominal authority.

Abbasid Caliphate: An Islamic caliphate founded in 750 that ruled from Baghdad until the Mongol conquest of 1258. Its weakening central government created openings for regional Iranian rulers.
Buyid dynasty: A Twelver Shi'a Iranian dynasty that controlled Baghdad and much of Iran from 934 to 1062. Buyid rulers governed the caliph’s capital while leaving the Abbasid caliph as a symbolic sovereign.
Ya'qub ibn al-Layth al-Saffar: The founder of the Saffarid dynasty, who ruled Sistan and challenged Abbasid authority in the ninth century. His rise from military origins shows how provincial rulers could build independent power.
New Persian: The modern form of Persian that developed after the Islamic conquest, written in the Arabic script. Iranian courts helped establish Persian as a language of literature and administration.
Abbasid Revolution: The uprising that overthrew the Umayyad Caliphate and established Abbasid rule in 750. Its Iranian support helped shape the dynasty’s early political and administrative order.
Seljuk Empire: A Turkic empire that ruled much of the Middle East from the eleventh to twelfth centuries. Seljuk rule replaced Buyid power in Baghdad while preserving Abbasid caliphal status.
Ismail Samani: A Samanid ruler who governed from 892 to 907 and consolidated his dynasty’s power in Transoxiana and Khurasan. His reign marks the Samanids’ emergence as a major Iranian regional power.
Shahnameh: Ferdowsi’s Persian epic poem recounting the legendary and historical kings of Iran. Its composition connected Islamic-era Persian culture to pre-Islamic Iranian traditions.
Fourth Fitna: A civil war between rival Abbasid claimants to the caliphate from 809 to 813. The conflict accelerated the loss of effective central control over distant provinces.
Emir al-umara: A military office in the Abbasid state whose holder exercised supreme practical authority over government and the army. The office formalized the separation between caliphal prestige and effective political control.
