Iranian nationalism

Iranian nationalism is a family of political movements that emphasize Iran’s national identity, sovereignty, and historical heritage. Its forms have drawn on Iranian languages, pre-Islamic history, Shiʿi traditions, and ideas of constitutional government.

Persian Constitutional Revolution: A 1905–1911 movement that established constitutional government and a parliament in Iran. It joined demands for popular sovereignty to opposition against royal and foreign power.
Pahlavi dynasty: Iran’s ruling dynasty from 1925 to 1979, founded by Reza Shah. It promoted a centralized state and public symbols tied to pre-Islamic Iran.
Mohammad Mosaddegh: Iranian prime minister from 1951 to 1953, known for nationalizing the oil industry. His movement linked popular sovereignty and control of resources to national independence.
Pan-Iranism: A political ideology advocating unity among Iranian peoples and, in some versions, territorial expansion. It represents an ethnolinguistic and sometimes irredentist strand within Iranian nationalism.
Nationalization of the Iranian oil industry: Iran’s 1951 transfer of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company’s assets to state ownership. It turned control of natural resources into a defining test of national sovereignty.
Anglo-Russian Convention of 1907: An agreement dividing Persia into British and Russian spheres of influence without Persian consent. Its violation of Iranian sovereignty intensified nationalist opposition to foreign intervention.
Persian language: An Indo-Iranian language spoken in Iran and several neighboring countries. Persian served as a shared national language in projects of state integration.
Abdolhossein Teymourtash: A leading minister under Reza Shah who helped build the modern Iranian state. His statecraft advanced centralized institutions associated with Pahlavi nationalism.
Islamic nationalism: A form of nationalism that grounds national identity and political aims in Islamic commitments. It contrasts with secular accounts that privilege pre-Islamic heritage or constitutional citizenship.
1953 Iranian coup d'état: The overthrow of Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh by Iranian and foreign actors in 1953. The coup deepened narratives of foreign domination and resistance in Iranian politics.
