Iron Curtain

The Iron Curtain was the political and ideological boundary separating Soviet-dominated Eastern Europe from Western Europe during the Cold War, marked by restricted movement and competing political systems.

Winston Churchill: British prime minister from 1940 to 1945 and 1951 to 1955, and a prominent Cold War speaker. His 1946 speech popularized the phrase for Europe’s division.
Eastern Bloc: The Soviet Union and the European states aligned with it during the Cold War. These states formed the eastern side of the boundary.
Hungarian Revolution of 1956: A Hungarian uprising against Soviet-backed rule, suppressed by Soviet forces in 1956. Its defeat demonstrated the limits of resistance within the Soviet sphere.
Truman Doctrine: A 1947 United States policy of supporting governments resisting communist movements or pressure. It expressed Western containment policy rather than the boundary itself.
Sinews of Peace speech: Winston Churchill’s 1946 address in Fulton, Missouri, warning of a Soviet-controlled division across Europe. It gave the Iron Curtain its best-known public formulation.
Eastern Europe: A region of Europe whose borders and definition vary across historical and political contexts. Soviet dominance over much of this region gave the Curtain its eastern side.
Prague Spring: A 1968 Czechoslovak reform movement that sought a more open form of socialism before Soviet-led forces intervened. Its suppression showed how military force guarded the eastern side of the divide.
Containment: A United States strategy of limiting the expansion of Soviet influence and communism. It was the Western policy response to the expanding Soviet sphere.
Yalta Conference: A February 1945 meeting where Allied leaders discussed postwar Europe and the defeat of Nazi Germany. Its agreements and ambiguities shaped disputes over Eastern Europe after the war.
Berlin Wall: A fortified barrier built in 1961 that divided East and West Berlin until 1989. It became the most visible and heavily guarded section of the division.
