Italian literature

Italian literature comprises literary works written in Italian or produced within Italy, from medieval poetry to contemporary writing. Its traditions include major contributions to lyric poetry, epic, drama, and the novel.

Sicilian School: A thirteenth-century group of poets at the court of Frederick II who helped establish Italian as a literary language. Its courtly lyrics helped shape the vernacular poetry later developed across Italy.
Divine Comedy: Dante’s three-part narrative poem follows a journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise. It joins vernacular language, theology, politics, and poetic invention in a foundational work.
Giovanni Boccaccio: A fourteenth-century Italian writer best known for the Decameron and his humanist scholarship. His narrative prose broadened the range and influence of vernacular storytelling.
Latin literature: Literary works composed in Latin, the language of ancient Rome and medieval European scholarship. Italian vernacular writing emerged alongside a long-standing prestige tradition in Latin.
Dante Alighieri: A medieval Italian poet whose works include the Divine Comedy and De vulgari eloquentia. His poetry gave lasting prestige to a Tuscan-based literary language.
Decameron: Giovanni Boccaccio’s collection of one hundred tales, framed as storytelling during the Black Death. Its prose and varied tales helped establish the Italian novella tradition.
Niccolò Machiavelli: A Florentine political thinker and writer whose works include The Prince and the comedy Mandragola. His political treatises and drama connect literary craft with civic life.
Italian dialect literature: Literary works written in Italy’s regional languages and dialects rather than standard Italian. It challenges the idea that Italian literature belongs only to one national language.
Dolce Stil Novo: A late thirteenth-century Italian poetic movement centered on refined love lyrics and spiritualized desire. It links early vernacular lyric to Dante and the later canon.
Orlando Furioso: Ludovico Ariosto’s Renaissance epic poem of chivalry, love, and warfare. It shows how Italian poets transformed the medieval romance into a sophisticated epic.
