Italian Somaliland

Italian Somaliland was an Italian colonial territory in the Horn of Africa, established in the late nineteenth century. It became part of the independent Somali Republic in 1960.

Italian colonialism: Italy’s pursuit of overseas territories and political control, especially in Africa, from the late nineteenth century onward. Italian Somaliland formed through Italy’s wider late-nineteenth-century colonial expansion.

Sultanate of Hobyo: A Somali sultanate founded in the nineteenth century in what is now central Somalia. Its ruler entered into an Italian protectorate agreement as Italy extended control along the Somali coast.
United Nations trusteeship of Somaliland: The United Nations trusteeship under Italian administration that governed former Italian Somaliland from 1950 to 1960. Italy returned as an administrator under international supervision, rather than as a colonial sovereign.
