Iwate Prefecture

A prefecture in northeastern Honshu, Japan, extending from the Pacific coast to a mountainous interior. Its capital and largest city is Morioka.

Morioka: The capital and largest city of Iwate Prefecture, in northern Honshu. Iwate’s administrative center is also its main urban hub.
Tōhoku region: The northeastern region of Honshu, comprising six prefectures. Iwate is one of Tōhoku’s six prefectures.
Mutsu Province: A historical province covering much of northeastern Honshu before Japan’s modern prefectural system. The territory of present-day Iwate was part of this former province.
2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami: A magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami that struck northeastern Japan on March 11, 2011. The tsunami devastated coastal communities in Iwate and transformed local recovery efforts.
Hiraizumi: A town in Iwate known for Buddhist temples and gardens associated with the Northern Fujiwara clan. Its UNESCO-listed monuments preserve Iwate’s medieval political and religious history.
Honshu: The largest and most populous island of Japan. Iwate occupies the northeastern part of Japan’s main island.
Northern Fujiwara: A ruling clan that governed Hiraizumi and surrounding areas in the late Heian period. Its twelfth-century capital made Hiraizumi a major center within today’s Iwate.
Rikuzentakata: A coastal city in Iwate Prefecture severely damaged by the 2011 tsunami. Its reconstruction illustrates the scale of the disaster along Iwate’s Pacific shore.
Sanriku Coast: A deeply indented Pacific coastline in northeastern Japan, including shores of Iwate Prefecture. The coast defines Iwate’s eastern edge and its exposure to the Pacific.
Prefectures of Japan: Japan’s 47 primary administrative divisions, including prefectures and metropolitan prefectures. Iwate’s government and boundaries belong to this national system.
