Jacques Cartier

Jacques Cartier was a French navigator whose three voyages to northeastern North America, between 1534 and 1542, mapped parts of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the St. Lawrence River.

Francis I of France: Francis I was king of France from 1515 to 1547, a patron of exploration and rival of Habsburg power. He commissioned Cartier’s first voyage in 1534 to explore lands claimed for France.

Cartier's second voyage: Cartier’s 1535–1536 expedition traveled up the St. Lawrence River to the Indigenous settlements of Stadacona and Hochelaga. It carried Cartier inland beyond the Gulf and into the river corridor.
Taignoagny: Taignoagny was a St. Lawrence Iroquoian man taken to France by Cartier after his first voyage. He and Domagaya later served as interpreters and intermediaries during Cartier’s second voyage.
Gulf of St. Lawrence: The Gulf of St. Lawrence is a large inlet of the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the St. Lawrence River. Cartier charted parts of the gulf, including its islands and coastlines, during his voyages.
