Ja'far al-Sadiq

Ja'far al-Sadiq (c. 702–765) was a Muslim scholar and the sixth Imam in Twelver and Isma'ili Shi'a Islam. His teachings shaped Shi'a law, theology, and understandings of religious authority.

Imamate in Shi'a Islam: The doctrine that divinely guided leaders from Muhammad's family hold religious authority in Shi'a Islam. Ja'far's position as the sixth Imam rests on this doctrine.
Ja'fari jurisprudence: The school of Islamic law associated with Ja'far al-Sadiq and followed principally by Twelver Shi'a Muslims. It preserves legal methods and rulings attributed to Ja'far.
Abu Hanifa: An eighth-century Muslim jurist and founder of the Hanafi school of Sunni law. Later accounts associate Abu Hanifa with study or scholarly exchange involving Ja'far.

Malik ibn Anas: An eighth-century Muslim jurist and founder of the Maliki school of Sunni law. Malik is reported to have learned from Ja'far, linking him to another legal tradition.
Abbasid Revolution: The movement that overthrew the Umayyad Caliphate and established Abbasid rule in 750. The revolution changed the political order during Ja'far's lifetime without ending Alid claims.
Zaydi Shi'ism: A branch of Shi'a Islam that recognizes Zayd ibn Ali and emphasizes an Imam's active claim to leadership. Zaydis differ from Twelvers and Isma'ilis in their succession and criteria for Imamate.
