James I of Aragon

James I ruled the Crown of Aragon from 1213 to 1276 and conquered Mallorca and much of Valencia. Known as James the Conqueror, he also shaped the laws and institutions of his realms.

Peter II of Aragon: King of Aragon from 1196 to 1213, who died fighting at the Battle of Muret. James inherited the throne after his father’s death at Muret.
Conquest of Mallorca: The campaign by James I of Aragon that captured Mallorca from its Muslim rulers in 1229–1231. It was James’s first major overseas conquest and secured the Balearic island for his crown.
Violant of Hungary: Queen consort of Aragon and second wife of James I, who played a role in dynastic and diplomatic affairs. Her marriage to James produced heirs central to the succession and partition of his lands.
Treaty of Corbeil: A 1258 agreement between James I of Aragon and Louis IX of France that settled competing claims in southern France and Catalonia. James relinquished claims north of the Pyrenees while France recognized his rights in Catalonia.
Battle of Muret: A 1213 battle in which Simon de Montfort’s forces defeated and killed Peter II of Aragon. Peter’s death there left the young James under the guardianship of his enemies.
Conquest of Valencia: The thirteenth-century Christian campaign that brought Valencia under the Crown of Aragon, culminating in the city’s surrender in 1238. James led the campaign that made Valencia a lasting part of his realm.
Peter III of Aragon: King of Aragon from 1276 to 1285 and a son of James I who inherited the principal Aragonese territories. James’s eldest surviving son succeeded him as king.
Crown of Aragon: A composite monarchy of territories ruled by the kings of Aragon, including Catalonia, Valencia, and the Balearic Islands. James’s conquests expanded this composite monarchy without erasing its distinct territories.
Simon de Montfort: A French nobleman who led the Albigensian Crusade and ruled territories in southern France. He held James in custody after Muret before papal intervention secured the boy’s release.
Kingdom of Valencia: A kingdom within the Crown of Aragon, established after the Christian conquest of Valencia in the thirteenth century. James organized the conquered territory as a distinct kingdom under his rule.
