James Madison

James Madison (1751–1836) was the fourth president of the United States and a principal architect of the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

Thomas Jefferson: Thomas Jefferson was the third U.S. president and principal author of the Declaration of Independence. Madison’s close political ally helped shape his views on religious liberty and limited government.
United States Constitution: The supreme law of the United States, establishing the national government and defining its powers. Madison helped shape its design at the 1787 convention and defended ratification.
Federalism: A system of government in which authority is divided between a national government and regional governments. Madison argued that divided sovereignty could restrain abuses by either level of government.
Virginia Declaration of Rights: A 1776 statement of rights adopted by Virginia, influential in American declarations and constitutions. Its language and principles formed part of the political inheritance Madison encountered in Virginia.

United States Bill of Rights: The first ten amendments to the United States Constitution, ratified in 1791. Madison drafted and shepherded these amendments in response to calls for explicit protections.
Separation of powers: The division of government authority among distinct branches with different functions. Madison treated separate branches as a structural defense against concentrated power.
Articles of Confederation: The first written constitution of the United States, in force from 1781 until 1789. Madison’s criticism of the Confederation government helped motivate his proposals for a stronger union.
George Washington: George Washington was the commander of the Continental Army and the first U.S. president. Madison worked with Washington at the Constitutional Convention and later opposed parts of his administration’s program.
War of 1812: A war between the United States and Britain from 1812 to 1815, also involving Indigenous nations and their allies. Madison requested war against Britain, and the conflict tested his leadership and the federal government.
