James Whitcomb Riley

James Whitcomb Riley (1849–1916) was an American poet and performer known for humorous and sentimental poems in Hoosier dialect, including “Little Orphant Annie” and “The Raggedy Man.”

Little Orphant Annie: A narrative poem by James Whitcomb Riley, first published as “The Elf Child,” in which a girl tells children cautionary tales. Its memorable refrain and warnings became among Riley’s most enduring contributions to American popular verse.
