Japanese National Railways

Japanese National Railways (JNR) was Japan’s state-owned railway corporation from 1949 until its privatization and breakup in 1987. It operated the national railway network and developed the Shinkansen.

Japanese National Railways Group: The six passenger railway companies and freight company created from JNR in 1987. These successor companies inherited JNR’s railway operations after its breakup.
Japanese Government Railways: The government agency that operated Japan’s national railways before the postwar creation of JNR. Its railway assets and operations formed JNR’s institutional predecessor.
Shinkansen: Japan’s network of high-speed railway lines, first opened between Tokyo and Osaka in 1964. JNR built and operated the first Shinkansen line and expanded the network.
Privatization of Japanese National Railways: The 1987 transfer of JNR’s railway operations to separate public and private companies. Privatization ended JNR and established the successor railway companies.
Japanese National Railways Settlement Corporation: A public corporation established to dispose of JNR’s assets and settle its debts after privatization. It handled liabilities and assets excluded from the operating companies.
Railway Ministry (Japan): The Japanese government ministry responsible for railways from 1920 to 1943. It administered the national railway system before wartime reorganizations.
Tōkaidō Shinkansen: The high-speed railway linking Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto, and Osaka, opened in 1964. This flagship JNR line transformed intercity travel along Japan’s largest urban corridor.
East Japan Railway Company: The railway company that operates passenger services across eastern Japan, including Tokyo. JR East became the largest passenger successor to JNR by network and ridership.
JNR debt: The large public debt accumulated by Japanese National Railways before its 1987 breakup. Debt was a central problem behind JNR’s restructuring and privatization.
Ministry of Transport (Japan): A Japanese government ministry responsible for transport policy and administration from 1949 to 2001. It supervised JNR during much of the corporation’s existence.
