Jehol Biota

The Jehol Biota is an Early Cretaceous fossil assemblage from northeastern China, renowned for preserving organisms in fine detail, including soft tissues, feathers, and stomach contents.

Sinosauropteryx: A small theropod dinosaur from China known for fossilized filament-like integument and preserved traces of pigmentation. Its fossil integument helped establish that Jehol deposits preserve evidence of dinosaur coloration.
Yixian Formation: A Lower Cretaceous geological formation in northeastern China containing many fossils of the Jehol Biota. Its lake and volcanic deposits yielded many of the assemblage’s best-known fossils.
Early Cretaceous: The first epoch of the Cretaceous Period, lasting approximately 145 to 100.5 million years ago. The Jehol assemblage flourished during this interval.
Feathered dinosaurs: Non-avian dinosaurs bearing feathers or feather-like integument, known from fossils across several groups. Jehol fossils supplied exceptionally detailed evidence that feathers were widespread among dinosaurs.
