Jet aircraft

An aircraft propelled by jet engines, which generate thrust by expelling fast-moving gases. Jet aircraft include commercial airliners, military fighters, and other aircraft.

Turbojet: A jet engine that compresses incoming air, burns fuel, and expels hot gases to produce thrust. Its direct exhaust-thrust cycle powered early jet aircraft and remains a reference design.
Aerodynamics: The study of how gases flow and exert forces on objects moving through them. Airflow around the aircraft determines lift, drag, and handling.
Jet airliner: A passenger airliner powered by jet engines. It is the most familiar civil use of jet propulsion.
Turboprop: An aircraft engine that uses a gas turbine to drive a propeller. Turboprops are generally more efficient than jets at lower speeds and shorter routes.
Jet age: The era in which jet-powered air travel became a major feature of transportation and society. Widespread jet airliners made long-distance travel faster and more accessible.
Turbofan: A jet engine in which a fan moves air around and through the engine core. Its bypass airflow makes it the standard engine type for modern airliners.
Lift (force): The aerodynamic force perpendicular to a body's motion through a fluid. Wings generate the upward force that supports a jet aircraft in flight.
Jet fighter: A military aircraft designed primarily to attack or defend against other aircraft using jet propulsion. Fighters prioritize maneuverability, speed, and weapons integration over passenger capacity.
Piston engine: An engine that produces power through the reciprocating motion of pistons in cylinders. Piston-powered aircraft typically fly slower and lower than jet aircraft.
Airport: A site equipped for aircraft arrivals, departures, and associated services. Jet aircraft helped drive the growth of large airports and long runways.
