Jizya

Jizya was a levy historically imposed on certain non-Muslim subjects under Islamic rule, often in exchange for protection and exemption from military service. Its rules and practice varied across states and periods.

Dhimmi: A non-Muslim subject granted protected status under a Muslim ruler in classical Islamic law. Jizya was commonly associated with the protected status of dhimmis.
Constitution of Medina: A document traditionally associated with Muhammad that set terms among communities in Medina. Its agreements provide early context for relations between the nascent Muslim community and other groups.

Kharaj: A land tax used in Islamic states, especially on conquered agricultural territories. Kharaj could be levied alongside jizya, though the taxes had different bases.
Quran: The central religious scripture of Islam, regarded by Muslims as divine revelation. Quran 9:29 became the principal scriptural reference for jizya in later legal discussions.
