Jochi

Jochi was the eldest son of Genghis Khan and founder of the Jochid dynasty. His descendants ruled the western Mongol territories, including the Golden Horde.

Genghis Khan: Genghis Khan founded the Mongol Empire and united Mongol tribes under his rule. Jochi’s father and the ruler who assigned him western territories.
Mongol Empire: The Mongol Empire was a vast Eurasian empire founded by Genghis Khan in the early thirteenth century. Jochi’s authority and inheritance arose from its rapid expansion.
Jochid dynasty: The Jochid dynasty was the branch of the Mongol ruling house descended from Jochi. Jochi founded the lineage that governed the western Mongol territories.
Chagatai Khanate: The Chagatai Khanate was a Mongol successor state in Central Asia ruled by descendants of Chagatai Khan. It was a sibling branch of the empire, unlike Jochi’s western inheritance.
Börte: Börte was Genghis Khan’s principal wife and the mother of his four sons, including Jochi. Her capture and return before Jochi’s birth later fueled doubts about his paternity.
Mongol invasion of Khwarezmia: The Mongol invasion of Khwarezmia was a campaign from 1219 to 1221 that destroyed the Khwarazmian Empire. Jochi led operations in the western campaign and received lands there.
Golden Horde: The Golden Horde was a Mongol khanate that ruled much of the western Eurasian steppe and parts of Eastern Europe. It became the best-known state ruled by Jochi’s descendants.
Ilkhanate: The Ilkhanate was a Mongol state that ruled much of Iran and neighboring regions. Its conflict with the Jochids showed the political distance between Mongol successor states.
Chagatai Khan: Chagatai Khan was Genghis Khan’s second son and a ruler of the Chagatai ulus in Central Asia. His dispute with Jochi over succession exposed tensions between the brothers.
Mongol conquest of the Qipchaq steppe: The Mongol conquest of the Qipchaq steppe brought much of the western Eurasian steppe under Mongol rule. Jochi’s assigned domain centered on these western lands.
