John Cage

John Cage (1912–1992) was an American composer and artist who used chance procedures, unconventional instruments, and silence to challenge what music could be.

Chance music: Music composed or performed using chance operations to determine some musical choices. Cage used chance procedures to relinquish deliberate control over compositional decisions.
4′33″: A three-movement work in which performers make no intentionally produced sounds for its timed duration. Its silence directs attention toward sounds that arise in the performance environment.
Merce Cunningham: An American dancer and choreographer whose company collaborated extensively with John Cage. Their partnership developed dance and music as independent events sharing a performance space.
Fluxus: An international art movement that used performance, scores, and everyday actions to challenge artistic conventions. Cage’s teaching and ideas influenced artists associated with Fluxus, though he was not a member.
