John Churchill

John Churchill, first Duke of Marlborough (1650–1722), was an English general and statesman who commanded Allied forces in the War of the Spanish Succession.

Battle of Blenheim: A 1704 battle in which Allied forces under Marlborough and Eugene of Savoy defeated a Franco-Bavarian army. Marlborough’s victory broke French momentum in the War of the Spanish Succession.
Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough: An English courtier and political figure who was a close confidante of Queen Anne and wife of John Churchill. Her court influence helped Marlborough’s rise and later became entangled in his fall.

James Butler, 2nd Duke of Ormonde: An Anglo-Irish military commander and statesman who replaced Marlborough as commander in the Low Countries in 1712. Ormonde’s cautious orders contrasted with Marlborough’s approach and contributed to Allied disunity.
