John I of Portugal

John I ruled Portugal from 1385 to 1433 and founded the House of Aviz. His reign secured Portugal’s independence from Castile and began its overseas expansion.

Battle of Aljubarrota: A 1385 battle in which Portuguese forces defeated a larger Castilian army. John’s decisive victory there established his rule and defended Portuguese independence.
Nuno Álvares Pereira: A Portuguese military commander who helped secure the victory at Aljubarrota and supported the House of Aviz. His military leadership was central to John’s survival during the succession war.
