John Milnor

John Milnor is an American mathematician whose work in differential topology, geometry, and algebra includes the discovery of exotic spheres and foundational results across these fields.

Exotic sphere: A smooth manifold homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to a standard sphere. Milnor’s 1956 discovery of an exotic seven-sphere showed that spheres can carry distinct smooth structures.
Smooth manifold: A space that locally resembles Euclidean space and has smoothly compatible coordinate charts. Exotic spheres differ from standard spheres in their smooth structure, not their underlying topology.
Morse theory: A method for studying a manifold by analyzing the critical points of a smooth function on it. Milnor’s textbook and research clarified how critical points reveal manifold topology.
