Johor Sultanate

A Malay sultanate founded in the sixteenth century by descendants of Melaka’s rulers, governing Johor and, at different times, parts of the Malay Peninsula and Riau Islands.

Sultanate of Malacca: A Malay Muslim kingdom centered on Melaka that became a major entrepôt before the Portuguese conquest of 1511. Johor’s founders descended from Melaka’s ruling house and sought to restore its political legacy.
Johor River: A river in southern Peninsular Malaysia that flows into the Strait of Johor. Its sheltered estuary supported Johor’s early court and connected it to regional shipping.
Sultan Mahmud Shah II: The last ruler of Johor’s direct Malay dynasty, assassinated in 1699 without an acknowledged heir. His death ended the ruling line and triggered a contested succession.
Sultanate of Pahang: A Malay sultanate on the east coast of the Malay Peninsula, whose ruling dynasty is linked to Johor’s. Johor’s dynastic history and territorial changes contributed to Pahang’s emergence as a separate sultanate.
Portuguese Malacca: The Portuguese-controlled settlement of Melaka, established after the conquest of 1511 and held until 1641. Portuguese rule at Melaka opposed Johor’s efforts to reclaim the former sultanate’s trading center.
Portuguese conquest of Malacca: The 1511 capture of Melaka by Portuguese forces led by Afonso de Albuquerque. The conquest displaced the ruling dynasty and helped set the conditions for Johor’s establishment.
Strait of Malacca: A narrow sea passage linking the Andaman Sea and the South China Sea between Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula. Control of trade routes through this strait underpinned Johor’s commercial and strategic ambitions.
Bendahara: A senior Malay court office combining high ministerial, military, and sometimes regency responsibilities. Johor’s bendahara took the throne after Mahmud Shah II’s death, changing the dynasty’s basis of rule.
Treaty of 1824: An agreement between Britain and the Netherlands that divided their spheres of influence in the Malay Archipelago. Its boundary split the Johor-Riau realm between British and Dutch spheres.
Sultanate of Aceh: A Muslim kingdom in northern Sumatra that became a major regional power in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Aceh pursued regional supremacy through campaigns that threatened Johor’s dynastic and commercial ambitions.
