Jordan River

The Jordan River flows through the Levant, forming parts of the borders of Israel, Jordan, and the occupied West Bank before emptying into the Dead Sea.

Dead Sea: A hypersaline lake bordered by Jordan, Israel, and the West Bank, lying at Earth’s lowest exposed land elevation. The river’s outlet is this landlocked lake, where most of its flow evaporates.
Hasbani River: A river rising in Lebanon that joins the Jordan River’s headwater system. Its water is one of the sources feeding the river’s northern channel.
Jordan River basin: The drainage basin whose rivers and runoff ultimately flow into the Jordan River and Dead Sea. Water allocation involves the whole basin, not just the river channel.
Baptism of Jesus: The event in Christian tradition in which John the Baptist baptized Jesus in the Jordan River. The river is identified as the setting of this foundational Christian episode.
Sea of Galilee: A freshwater lake in northern Israel, also known as Lake Tiberias or Lake Kinneret. The Jordan’s main channel exits this lake and continues south.
Dan River: A spring-fed tributary of the Jordan River in northern Israel. Its strong flow contributes to the Jordan’s headwaters.
Johnston Plan: A 1950s proposal for allocating water among Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria in the Jordan basin. It remains a key reference point in discussions of basin-wide water shares.
John the Baptist: A Jewish preacher who baptized people in the Jordan River and is described in the Gospels as baptizing Jesus. His ministry made the river a central place in Christian accounts of baptism.
Yarmouk River: A river rising in Syria that joins the Jordan River near the Israel-Jordan border. Its flow is a major tributary contribution to the lower Jordan.
Banias River: A tributary of the Jordan River fed by springs at the foot of Mount Hermon. It joins the headwater streams that form the upper Jordan.
