Joseph Brant

Joseph Brant, also known as Thayendanegea, was a Mohawk leader who served as a military officer and diplomat and allied with Britain during the American Revolution.

Guy Johnson: A British Indian Department official who built influence among the Haudenosaunee in the years before the American Revolution. Johnson became Brant’s mentor and helped connect him to British imperial politics.
Haudenosaunee: A confederacy of six Indigenous nations in the northeastern woodlands, also known as the Iroquois Confederacy. Brant acted within Haudenosaunee politics, where nations debated how to respond to the war.
