Joseph Chamberlain

Joseph Chamberlain (1836–1914) was a British industrialist and politician who rose from Birmingham’s civic leadership to become a leading Liberal, then Liberal Unionist, and colonial secretary.

William Ewart Gladstone: William Ewart Gladstone was a British Liberal prime minister and a leading nineteenth-century parliamentary politician. Chamberlain served in Gladstone’s government before their break over Irish Home Rule.
Liberal Unionism: Liberal Unionism was the movement of Liberals who opposed Irish Home Rule and allied with Conservatives. Chamberlain became its most prominent political leader after breaking with Gladstone.
Mayor of Birmingham: The mayor of Birmingham is the chief civic office in the city’s municipal government. Chamberlain used the office from 1873 to 1876 to launch an ambitious program of civic improvements.
