Joseph de Maistre

Joseph de Maistre (1753–1821) was a Savoyard philosopher and diplomat who defended hereditary monarchy, papal authority, and counterrevolution after the French Revolution.

Counter-Enlightenment: An intellectual movement that challenged Enlightenment confidence in reason, progress, and universal political principles. De Maistre became one of its most forceful critics of rationalist politics.
