Julian Schwinger

Julian Schwinger (1918–1994) was an American theoretical physicist whose formulation of quantum electrodynamics helped explain how light and charged particles interact. He shared the 1965 Nobel Prize in Physics with Richard Feynman and Sin-Itiro Tomonaga.

Richard Feynman: Richard Feynman was an American theoretical physicist who developed a path-integral formulation of quantum mechanics and a diagrammatic approach to quantum electrodynamics. He shared the 1965 Nobel Prize with Schwinger for work on quantum electrodynamics.
Quantum electrodynamics: Quantum electrodynamics is the relativistic quantum field theory of electromagnetic interactions between light and charged particles. It is the theory Schwinger reformulated and helped make predictively precise.
Quantum field theory: Quantum field theory describes particles and their interactions using quantum fields distributed through space and time. Schwinger’s methods treated electromagnetic interactions within this broader framework.

Lamb shift: The Lamb shift is the small energy difference between two hydrogen energy levels predicted to coincide by the Dirac equation. Schwinger calculated this radiative correction using renormalized quantum electrodynamics.
