Kamehameha I

Kamehameha I (c. 1758–1819) united the Hawaiian Islands and became the first ruler of the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1810.

Hawaiian Islands: An archipelago in the central Pacific Ocean, inhabited by Polynesian settlers before European contact. Their separate island polities formed the territory Kamehameha sought to unite.
Battle of Nuʻuanu: The 1795 battle in which Kamehameha’s forces defeated Kalanikūpule’s army on Oʻahu. Its victory brought Oʻahu under Kamehameha’s control and advanced unification.
Kingdom of Hawaii: The independent Hawaiian state established through the islands’ unification under Kamehameha I. Kamehameha founded the kingdom whose political structure endured under his successors.
Kaʻahumanu: A powerful Hawaiian chiefess who served as Kamehameha I’s wife and later as regent and kuhina nui. She was a major political partner and governed during the succession of Kamehameha II.
Kamehameha Day: A Hawaiian state holiday observed on June 11 in honor of Kamehameha I. The annual celebration makes his unification a continuing public memory.
Hawaiian aliʻi: The hereditary chiefly class that held political and religious authority in traditional Hawaiian society. Kamehameha’s chiefly lineage and alliances shaped his claim to rule.
Kalanikūpule: A chief of Maui and Oʻahu who opposed Kamehameha’s expansion in the 1790s. His defeat at Nuʻuanu removed the principal rival for control of Oʻahu.
Kamehameha II: The second king of the Kingdom of Hawaii, who succeeded Kamehameha I in 1819. His succession tested the stability of the monarchy Kamehameha had established.
Keōpūolani: A high-ranking Hawaiian chiefess and wife of Kamehameha I, mother of Kamehameha II and III. Her lineage connected Kamehameha’s house to two successive kings.
Kamehameha Statue: A prominent statue of Kamehameha I displayed in front of ʻAliʻiōlani Hale in Honolulu. Its civic setting presents him as a symbol of Hawaiian government and identity.
