Kang Youwei

Kang Youwei (1858–1927) was a Chinese scholar and political reformer who advocated constitutional monarchy and helped lead the Hundred Days’ Reform of 1898.

Liang Qichao: A Chinese scholar, journalist, and reformer who became Kang Youwei’s close student and political collaborator. Kang’s most prominent protégé helped publicize and advance his reform program.
Hundred Days’ Reform: A short-lived 1898 Qing reform program that sought sweeping changes to education, government, and the economy. Kang helped shape the proposals that Guangxu issued during this reform drive.
Confucian classics: The foundational texts studied and interpreted within the Confucian tradition. Kang’s reinterpretations of these texts supplied historical authority for reform.
Hundred Days’ Coup: The 1898 court coup that ended Guangxu’s reform program and placed him under confinement. The coup forced Kang into exile and ended his immediate influence at court.
Guangxu Emperor: The Qing emperor who issued reform edicts during the Hundred Days’ Reform. Kang’s proposals gained imperial sponsorship through Guangxu’s support.

Empress Dowager Cixi: The Qing ruler who dominated the court and ended the reform movement in 1898. Her intervention reversed the political opening Kang had secured.
Datong shu: Kang Youwei’s utopian work envisioning a future world without social divisions or national boundaries. It extends his reformist thought beyond Qing institutions to humanity’s future.
