Karakoram

The Karakoram is a high mountain range in Central Asia, spanning parts of Pakistan, India, and China. It contains K2 and some of the world’s largest glaciers outside the polar regions.

K2: K2 is the world’s second-highest mountain, rising 8,611 metres on the Pakistan–China border. The range’s highest and most famous peak stands on its northern edge.
Indian Plate: The Indian Plate is a tectonic plate carrying the Indian subcontinent and adjacent oceanic crust. Its northward collision with Eurasia drives uplift across the Karakoram.
Karakoram Highway: The Karakoram Highway is a road linking Pakistan and China through the Karakoram region. It crosses the range and connects settlements on both sides of the border.
Himalayas: The Himalayas are a mountain system stretching across South Asia, south of the Tibetan Plateau. They lie southeast of the Karakoram and differ in geography and glacial distribution.
Baltoro Glacier: The Baltoro Glacier is a large valley glacier in the Karakoram of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. It threads through the range’s central cluster of high peaks.
Eurasian Plate: The Eurasian Plate is a tectonic plate encompassing most of Europe and Asia. The Karakoram rises within the broad collision zone along its southern margin.
Baltoro Muztagh: Baltoro Muztagh is a mountain range within the Karakoram, containing K2 and several neighboring eight-thousanders. Its peaks form the range’s most concentrated cluster of very high mountains.
Hindu Kush: The Hindu Kush is a mountain range extending through Afghanistan and northern Pakistan. It borders the Karakoram region to the west but forms a distinct range.
Siachen Glacier: The Siachen Glacier is a glacier in the eastern Karakoram, claimed by India and Pakistan. It lies in the range’s disputed eastern sector.
Himalayan orogeny: The Himalayan orogeny is the mountain-building process caused by collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates. This regional collision provides the larger tectonic setting for Karakoram uplift.
