Karbala

Karbala is a city in central Iraq and the site of Husayn ibn Ali’s shrine. It is a major destination for Shia pilgrimage and a focal point of Shia religious memory.

Husayn ibn Ali: Husayn ibn Ali was Muhammad’s grandson and the third Shia imam, killed at Karbala in 680. His martyrdom at Karbala anchors the city’s place in Shia devotion.
Imam Husayn Shrine: The Imam Husayn Shrine is a mosque and mausoleum in Karbala built around the tomb of Husayn ibn Ali. It is the city’s principal pilgrimage destination and sacred landmark.
Umayyad Caliphate: The Umayyad Caliphate was the Islamic dynasty that ruled from 661 to 750, first from Damascus. The Umayyad ruler Yazid I’s forces fought Husayn at Karbala.
Najaf: Najaf is an Iraqi city containing the shrine of Ali ibn Abi Talib, a major Shia pilgrimage site. Its shrine honors Ali, while Karbala centers on his son Husayn.
Ashura: Ashura is the tenth day of Muharram, commemorated by Muslims and especially significant in Shia Islam. Karbala’s defining tragedy is mourned annually on this day.
Al-Abbas Shrine: The Al-Abbas Shrine in Karbala is the mausoleum of Abbas ibn Ali, Husayn’s half-brother and standard-bearer at the Battle of Karbala. Its proximity to Husayn’s shrine forms the paired focus of pilgrimage in the city.
Yazid I: Yazid I was the second Umayyad caliph, ruling from 680 to 683. His rule and demand for allegiance from Husayn set the political crisis behind Karbala’s defining battle.
Mecca: Mecca is a city in Saudi Arabia containing the Kaaba, Islam’s holiest sanctuary and the destination of the Hajj. Mecca is central to pilgrimage for all Muslims; Karbala is especially central to Shia devotion.
Arba'een: Arba'een is a Shia observance held forty days after Ashura, marked by pilgrimage to Husayn’s shrine. The annual pilgrimage makes Karbala the destination of one of the world’s largest religious gatherings.
Karbala Governorate: Karbala Governorate is an administrative province of Iraq whose capital is the city of Karbala. The city is both a religious center and the seat of its surrounding province.
