Karl Weierstrass

Karl Weierstrass (1815–1897) was a German mathematician who helped establish rigorous foundations for analysis and made major contributions to complex analysis and function theory.

Weierstrass function: A continuous nowhere-differentiable function constructed by Karl Weierstrass. Its pathological behavior challenged assumptions about how smooth continuous functions must be.
Complex analysis: The study of functions of complex variables and their properties. Weierstrass developed a major approach to complex functions through power series and analytic continuation.
Ernst Kummer: A German mathematician known for work in number theory and algebra. Kummer recognized Weierstrass's work and helped secure his appointment at the University of Berlin.
