Karma Kagyu

Karma Kagyu is a major lineage of Tibetan Buddhism within the Kagyu school, founded in the 12th century by Düsum Khyenpa, the first Karmapa.

Düsum Khyenpa: A Tibetan Buddhist master who founded the Karma Kagyu lineage and became its first Karmapa. He established the lineage in the 12th century and began its Karmapa succession.
Mahamudra: A Buddhist contemplative approach that uses meditation to realize the nature of mind. Mahamudra is a central meditation tradition transmitted in Karma Kagyu.
Gampopa: An 11th- and 12th-century Tibetan master who combined Kadam monastic teachings with Milarepa's meditation lineage. His synthesis became a major foundation for the Kagyu lineages, including Karma Kagyu.
Rumtek Monastery: A major Karma Kagyu monastery in Sikkim, India, established as the seat of the 16th Karmapa in exile. It became a central institutional seat for the lineage outside Tibet.
Karmapa controversy: A dispute over recognition and authority involving competing claimants to the 17th Karmapa title. The competing recognitions expose unresolved questions about succession within Karma Kagyu.
Kagyu: One of the major schools of Tibetan Buddhism, known for lineages of meditation instruction transmitted from teacher to student. Karma Kagyu is one of the Kagyu school's principal lineages.

Tsurphu Monastery: A Tibetan monastery founded by Düsum Khyenpa and traditionally associated with the Karmapas. It served as the Karmapas' principal seat in Tibet for centuries.
Ogyen Trinley Dorje: A Tibetan Buddhist teacher recognized by many Karma Kagyu institutions as the 17th Karmapa. His recognition is one side of the dispute over the current Karmapa succession.
