The Kashmir conflict is a long-running dispute involving India and Pakistan over the region’s sovereignty and political future, shaped by partition, wars, and insurgency.

Partition of India: The 1947 division of British India into independent India and Pakistan, accompanied by mass migration and communal violence. Partition left princely states, including Jammu and Kashmir, to choose their political alignment.
Line of Control: The military control line separating Indian-administered and Pakistan-administered parts of Kashmir. It marks the principal division between the two states’ forces without settling sovereignty.
Sheikh Abdullah: A Kashmiri political leader who headed Jammu and Kashmir’s government and advocated autonomy within India. His shifting relationship with New Delhi influenced the region’s early post-accession politics.
Second Kashmir War: The 1965 war between India and Pakistan, fought largely over Kashmir. The war showed that the 1949 ceasefire had not resolved the territorial conflict.
Kashmir plebiscite: A proposed popular vote to determine Jammu and Kashmir’s political status, envisaged in early UN resolutions. Pakistan emphasizes a plebiscite, while India disputes its present relevance and conditions.
Instrument of Accession of Jammu and Kashmir: The 1947 document by which Maharaja Hari Singh acceded Jammu and Kashmir to India. India cites the accession as the legal basis of its sovereignty claim.
Siachen Glacier conflict: The military standoff between India and Pakistan over control of the Siachen Glacier and surrounding heights. The undefined boundary beyond the Line of Control became another site of confrontation.
Jawaharlal Nehru: India’s first prime minister, who played a central role in the Kashmir dispute and its internationalization. Nehru’s policies and UN appeal shaped India’s early approach to the dispute.
Kargil War: The 1999 conflict in which Pakistani soldiers and militants occupied positions on the Indian side of the Line of Control near Kargil. The fighting demonstrated how the control line could become a flashpoint despite nuclear deterrence.
Article 370 of the Constitution of India: A constitutional provision that granted Jammu and Kashmir special autonomy within India until its effective revocation in 2019. Its former protections represented an autonomy-based approach distinct from separation or accession to Pakistan.
