Kattegat

The Kattegat is a sea between Denmark and Sweden, linking the Baltic Sea to the Skagerrak and the North Sea.

Skagerrak: A sea between Norway, Sweden, and Denmark that connects the North Sea with the Kattegat. This northern gateway carries the Kattegat’s exchange with the North Sea.
Danish straits: A group of passages between Denmark and Sweden linking the Baltic Sea with the Kattegat and North Sea. Their restricted openings govern much of the exchange between the Kattegat and Baltic.
Port of Gothenburg: The largest port in the Nordic countries, located on Sweden’s west coast at the Kattegat entrance. Its seaward approach crosses the Kattegat and connects Swedish trade to the North Sea.

Great Belt: A strait in Denmark connecting the Kattegat with the Baltic Sea through the Danish straits. It forms another major route from the Kattegat toward the Baltic.
Brackish water: Water with salinity between that of freshwater and seawater. Mixing of Baltic outflow and saline inflow creates brackish conditions in the Kattegat.
