Kevlar

Kevlar is a strong, heat-resistant para-aramid fiber made from aligned polymer chains. It is used in protective equipment, tires, ropes, and composite materials.

Poly-para-phenylene terephthalamide: A rigid aromatic polyamide polymer whose aligned chains form Kevlar fiber. Kevlar’s chemical identity is this polymer, commonly abbreviated PPTA.
Ballistic vest: A garment designed to reduce injury from bullets and other ballistic threats. Woven Kevlar layers can absorb and spread projectile energy in soft armor.
Twaron: A para-aramid fiber produced by Teijin, with properties similar to Kevlar. Twaron is a competing para-aramid used in comparable protective and industrial products.
Stephanie Kwolek: An American chemist who discovered Kevlar while working at DuPont. Her experiments with liquid-crystalline polymer solutions led to Kevlar’s discovery.
Personal protective equipment: Equipment worn or used to reduce exposure to workplace and other hazards. Kevlar became a material option across armor, gloves, helmets, and protective clothing.
Liquid-crystal spinning: A fiber-forming process that extrudes ordered liquid-crystalline polymer solutions into aligned filaments. It helps orient Kevlar’s rigid chains along the fiber axis.
Cut-resistant glove: A protective glove made to resist slicing and abrasion. Kevlar fibers reinforce gloves used around sharp tools and materials.
Nomex: A meta-aramid fiber known for heat and flame resistance rather than high tensile strength. Nomex is often preferred when flame protection matters more than Kevlar-like strength.
DuPont: An American chemical company founded in 1802 that developed numerous industrial materials. DuPont developed and commercialized Kevlar.
Ballistic protection: Methods and materials that reduce harm from bullets, fragments, and other projectiles. Kevlar enabled lightweight soft armor that can stop some ballistic threats.
